Behind the lens: capturing raf saperra live at somerset house, london
I’ve photographed some massive shows and high-profile events, but the crowd energy for Raf Saperra at Somerset House was unmatched. From the moment the lights dropped, the atmosphere was electric.
As a sport photographer stepping onto a concert stage, you bring a different instincts to live performance. You’re trained to deal with rapid movement, unpredictable low-light conditions, and high pressure turnarounds. Covering this show meant relying heavily on those sports photography fundamentals to capture every moment with absolute precision.

Equipped with my Tamron 28-75mm, I quickly realized a 70-200mm would have provided the ideal reach for the venue layout. Drawing on my technical adaptability, I switched into APS-C mode, effectively giving me a tight 42mm to 112.5mm telephoto equivalent. While you trade off a bit of resolution, knowing how to leverage your camera’s crop mode on the fly allows you to secure dynamic, tack-sharp framing without sacrificing image quality.

That extra reach proved essential for the standout moment of the night: Raf’s explosive entry to his hit Art of War, accompanied by Vish Dholi and Bobby Kang. The synergy between Raf’s raw vocals and the live dhol performance was incredible. Later in the set, capturing the detail on Raf’s custom handmade outfit, a piece that commanded massive presence on stage, required timing the harsh, changing stage lights perfectly.

Live stage environments rarely go strictly to plan. Originally expecting to cover three songs, access was trimmed down to just two. On top of navigating restricted media management on site, every second off-stage counted.
This is where my sports photography background gave me a distinct edge. Working fast under tight constraints, I leveraged unique angles and rapid positioning to deliver a full gallery of 100+ fully edited, high-resolution selects within hours of the show ending. The feedback from Raf’s team was overwhelmingly positive, appreciating both the quick turnaround and the distinct visual style.
